Risk and Regulation of Athlete Biometric Data Processing

  • Athlete biometric data refers to the information generated by measuring and tracking the physical and physiological characteristics of athletes. With the advancement of various sensors and motion capture technologies, athlete biometric data has been widely applied in such fields as the load quantification and training optimization, performance evaluation and tactical improvement, and the selection of competitive sports talents, becoming an important booster for the development of competitive sports. However, while empowered by technology, the data processing has the issues of data validity and interpretation, risks of data integration and vulnerability, hidden concerns about data privacy and its diffuse infringement, and threats of technological inequality to fair competition in sports. In order to effectively regulate the risk effects of biometric data processing on athletes, it is urgent to build a deviation control programme that effectively collaborates data and algorithmic laws and regulations, to improve the safety prevention system that is guided by the joint efforts of risk assessment and control responsibilities, to shape the rights protection programme that shifts from the "empowerment of the subject" to the "fiduciary duty", and to push the development of equitable facilitation mechanism characterized by the interactive development of technical review and integrity mechanism.
