Experience of the Rise of the Three Major Team Sports in Japan and the Practical Inspiration for China

  • At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Japan's men's and women's national teams in the "Three Major Team Sports" (football, basketball, and volleyball) all secured their spots, making Japan the first Asian country and the third country in the world to achieve this feat as a non-host nation in the history of the Summer Olympics. This milestone success holds significant implications for the development of similar sports in China. Research indicates that the key factors behind Japan's success in the "Three Major Team Sports" include: the systematization and scientification of talent development mechanisms, the improvement and marketization of professional league systems, the stabilization and specialization of tactical styles, the internationalization and localization of development strategies, and the scientification and precision of training and competition concepts. For the development of China's "Three Major Team Sports", we should follow the ways from "segregated barriers" to "system integration", implementing an integrated upgrading strategy for youth training systems; from "indecision" to "firm innovation", promoting a Chinese-style tactical system; from "league challenges" to "ecological restructuring", achieving an ecological restructuring of the professional league system for the "Three Major Team Sports"; and from "experience-driven" to "data-driven", driving a scientific transformation in training for the "Big Three Ball Sports".
