Representation and Mechanism of Strategic Narratives in Mega-Sports Events

  • From the "meso" perspective and introducing the theory of strategic narrative, this study conducts a qualitative coding analysis of the 2024 Paris Olympics Official Report. The analysis reveals that: in the temporal dimension, the narrative equally emphasizes the "present" and the "future"; spatially, it exhibits integration and cohesion; and in terms of meaning, it demonstrates conceptual leadership and value alignment. Compared with the texts of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, it is revealed distinctive patterns characterized by "common themes interpreted through divergent narrative paradigms". The research further extracts a framework and key components for constructing strategic narratives in mega-sports events. These components include internal narrative mechanisms such as identity configuration and integration, diversified narrative resource support, and the logical reinforcement of sports values. Additionally, the analysis identifies dynamic interactions between narrative and practice, described as "coupling and mutual reinforcement—perceptibility", "societal orientation—experiential accessibility", and "alignment with international discourse—connectivity". This investigation yields critical insights into identity construction, discursive support, the logic of value cognition, and the intertextuality between practice and narrative.
