The Relationship between Perceived Stress and Athletic Burnout: A Moderated Mediation Model

  • Based on the pressure model, this research constructed a moderated mediation model to examine the mediating effect of the core self-evaluation and the moderating role of perceived social support.A total of 282 athletes participated in this study and completed the questionnaire survey of perceived social support, core self-evaluation, athletic burnout and perceived stress. The conclusions are shown as followed:① The athletes' perceived stress significantly contributed to athletic burnout; ② The athletes' core self-evaluation partially mediated the correlation between perceived stress and athletic burnout, that is, perceived stress not only had a direct influence on athletic burnout, but affected athletic burnout indirectly by core self-evaluation; ③ The perceived social support moderated the mediated path through core self-evaluation, with a stronger indirect effect for those athletes who have higher perceived social support. Therefore, both mediating and moderating effects exist in the association between perceived stress and athletic burnout.
