Discipline Trend and Research Prospect: Reflections on the Discipline Construction of Sport Historiography

  • With the efforts of several generations of scholars, sport historiography in China has gone through a century of development with fruitful research results and also the great progress in discipline construction. However, the reflections on sport historiography which began in the 1960s still show many problems including the low status of the discipline and the unsystematic construction of sub-disciplines and etc. Based on the current "crisis" discourse of the discipline, the studies on the problems in the discipline construction of Chinese sport historiography are conducted and its future research prospect is predicted. It is held that, from the construction of sub-disciplines, three sub-disciplines the academic history of sport historiography, documentology of sport historiography and theory of sport historiography should be built while in terms of the construction of the discipline development platform, sport historiography teaching platform, academic exchange platform and social service platform should be further established. The experience of discipline construction should be drawn from the main trends of international and domestic historical studies thus to promote the discipline construction of sport historiography and open up a new leaf in the study of sport historiography.
