Abstract: Based on the current problems of national traditional sports' development, the paper explored the contemporary missions and development orientation of national traditional sports. It concludes that the development of national traditional sports must gain the foothold at the height of the nation-state construction in order to cast the cornerstone for the nation-state security and prosperity, to develop the national culture for the nation-state construction and governance, and to enhance the national self-confidence for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese people. Therefore the contemporary development of traditional sports should be committed to moulding the "soul" of the national traditional sports, adhering to the guard line of "national security", promoting the "nature" of national traditional sports, and highlighting the national symbol. Meanwhile, it should dedicate itself to spreading the "value" of the national traditional sports, strengthening the function of the state governance, promoting the education of national traditional sports, and upholding the banner of patriotism in terms of development orientation.
